Héctor González is a graduate of the School of Social Sciences of the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB), he is 31 years old, at the moment he is the director of the Sport for Development social organization.
I learned of the UCAB because the son of a friend of my mother studied in it and recommended it to us.
I joined the UCAB in 2003 to study engineering; in 2006 I changed to sociology, thanks to the support programs in vocational matters offered by the university.
During his entire career years Hector received economic support programs, initially with financing and then, with a wok for studies programs.
At first I did not know about these economic support programs, but then, when I took the admissions test they told me about them. In fact, I was awarded a scholarship during the whole career, initially with funding and later with the work scholarship.
I had the financing for the first two years of each career, and then I opted for a scholarship to work in the Humanistic Research and Training Center (CIFH).
The work for study scholarship allowed me live the university, I spent all day in it, in the mornings I was in class and in the afternoons I worked. In addition, the workplace was excellent and allowed me to meet many wonderful people, who are now my friends.
In his career years, Héctor, did many activities, from being a storyteller, playing indoor soccer, being part of the student movement of his School, being a Student Representative, Vice President of the Student Center, Faculty Advisor to School Counselor; He studied in the Chair of Honor, a leadership program that trains 40 students to be able to recognize in themselves the skills to be a good leader. He was also a study coach of Sociology II, given by Professor Antonio Cova.
I have a game with my nickname ‘Papelón’. Each time I tell a different story of how it came about, which may be the true or not. Each person decides whether to believe me or not. They call me so because when I was a kid, I spilled a glass of it all over me, I was ashamed all day and the other children started calling me: “Papelón, Papelón, Papelón” and that’s how it stayed. Then someone said it outside the school and it stuck like a sticky virus. It became something that looked much more like me, very cool and very Venezuelan.
In college, during the student election era, it was so crazy that I had to debate with the dean if they could let me put my nickname on the college ballot, because nobody knew my first name. I had to tell everyone my real name. When I visit the communities I introduce myself as Héctor but there is always a gossiper that tells them that my name is Papelón, and that’s fine, that’s easier to remember. – Héctor González for Epix.
He also participated in volunteer activities, both with his school and with Community Projection.
During my studies I developed a very important sense of social vocation, and when I graduated I started working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and at one point a colleague, with whom I worked, presented me with a project, which also included two great passions, sports and volunteering.
Initially it would be within the activities of the NGO, but it started to grow so much that we decided to enroll in the Ideas 2012 contest, in which we won the honorable mention. And it kept growing until we decided to create an organization.
Thus was born the social organization “Deporte para el Desarrollo”, co-founded by Héctor, José Guerra and Rober Rondón.
Our work methodology allows the sports coach to learn to work on the social problems that come to their spaces, that is, if they face, for example, issues associated with violence, the coach knows how to speak and what activities to develop to help the children he works with.
